“Approaching a wine worth three figures could be likenedto watching a batsman as they move towards 100. For most people there is alittle anticipation and the worry that the wine, like a batsman, might fallshort of the mark. Although these days there are plenty of Australian winesworth more than $100, it is still a big decision for most wine buyers.

While wines lower down the price scale can be more easily weighed up for value,it is far more difficult to attach that term to a wine of $100 or more. Thatjudgment can only be made by the individual. What can be looked at is thewine's quality and pedigree.

In that area the 2009 Kalleske Johann Georg Shiraz, which weighs in at a retailprice of about $100, makes the cut. There is no question this is a very classywine from the internationally recognised shiraz region, South Australia's BarossaValley.

As for the pedigree side, the Kalleske family has been involved in theproduction of wine for nearly 160 years. Although it has only been involved inthe winemaking side of the operation for a decade, the family's fruit made itsway into various vintages of Australia's benchmark Penfolds Grange.

The Kalleske label has been one of the emerging stars of Australian wine andthe Johann Georg Shiraz shines brightly at the top of an impressive line-up ofwines. The wine comes from the vineyard of the same name, which has vines datingback to 1875. After hand picking, the wine was given two years in French and Americanoak before bottling. The dark purple to black colour reflects the red and blackfruits that emerge on the nose through to the palate. The same path is taken bycedar and spice. The wine is full and complex, with fine but firm integratedtannins that promise to soften further with time in the cellar.

To keep the cricket analogy rolling, Kalleske also has some solid contributorsdown the order. The Australian organically certified producer has also releasedits 2009 Eduard Shiraz ($85), 2009 Old Vine Grenache ($45), 2010 Greenock Shiraz($38) and 2010 Dodger Tempranillo.

The Eduard comes from vines planted between 1905 and 1960, and more than likelywould have tasters who would favour it over the Johann Georg. It probably doesnot have the broad flavours of the higher-price wine, but that does not make itany less attractive with its plum and berry fruit having concentrated power.

In the Old Vine Grenache and the Dodger Tempranillo, Kalleske offers an excellentmix of the old and new. Grenache is a great old Barossa variety that iswonderful with many Asian dishes, while tempranillo is an in variety in Europeand is growing in popularity in this country.

In many company ranges, the Greenock Shiraz would be the top wine.

That illustrates how powerful this line-up is”.

The weather has been good in the lead up to vintage 2012 and all the grapes are looking great as we prepare to start another vintage in the next couple of weeks.

Great to see our Dodger Tempranillo and new bottle receiving some praise from Campbell Mattinson at the Wine Front... it's one of our favourite wines to drink at the moment.

90+ POINTS
Single vineyard wine from Kalleske. Biodynamically grown. Comes in a heavy new – but fantastic, to my eye – proprietary bottle.

We have a live one here. It’s a very interesting wine to drink. Sweet core of aniseedy fruit matched to earthen and dried herb notes. Feels cool and composed. Like the dry slick of tannin too. Fruity length. Not overdone. Not tarry or marred by alcohol/overt sweetness either. Just a good, medium-bodied, highly-drinkable red wine.

2010Kalleske Dodger Tempranillo

Brightdark red colour. Nose has dark herbalcharacters with touches of earth, rosemary and dark chocolate. Plate is firm of tannins, quiet rounded,wrapped around dark herbal fruits with some cherry overtones. With some time inthe glass, the palate evolved into attractive black olives splayed over the pipof a green olive adding lovely complexity. A structure that was fine driven by lean acidity that balanced out along finish.

2010Kalleske Buckboard Durif

Blackhole like colour with a purple hue. A full and rich nose of dark berries,liquorice and touch of perfume. Palate is rich and full bodied. Dark berries onthe palate supported by mocha and clove like herbal characters and coffee. Thisis a big styled wine that would match the reputed home of Durif - the Rutherglen. A big flavour profile and attractive tanninstructure somewhere between gravel and grain coat the tongue and draw out thepalate leaving a well satisfied finish.

2010Kalleske Greenock Shiraz

Deepdark brooding colour that is hedonistically purple and alluring at the sametime. Strong mocha and coffee tones on the nose equally matched by plum anddark berry fruits, aniseed and just a lick of oaken influence. A viscouspalate, rich and mouth filling as always with the Greenock. Again, dark black fruits and aniseedsupported by mocha, touch of earth in behind and some complexity of rhubarbreally filling out the palate and adding to the texture (maybe some whole bunchfermentation). Fine grainy tanninsreminiscent of velvet evoke a wild thoughts of being wrapped in bunches ofgrapes. A very long palate, wellbalanced and this will age very well and for a long time. I thought the 2009 was good, this is perhapsthe best yet.

Tastedon a surprisingly cool December evening with a simply prepared steak servedwith rocket, pear and parmesan salad.

Also, I am loving the new bottle shape. It is something to really grab hold of when pouring.

Q & A with Troy Kalleske

Q. When were you born?
A. I was a vintage baby, born 8th March 1978, Kapunda.

Q. Why a winemaker?
A. Whilst I grew up amongst the vines, my interest in winemaking started at Faith Lutheran School, where in 1993 I was part of the Agricultural class to first make wine at the school. I then studied winemaking and in 1999 I graduated with a Bachelor of Agricultural Science (Oenology) Degree from the University of Adelaide.

Q.Work before Kalleske Wines?

A. Following university, I was a graduate winemaker with Southcorp where I worked at Seppelt Great Western, Southcorp Tumbarumba, Lindemans Karadoc, Penfolds Barossa and Seppeltsfield fortified winery. I’ve also completed a vintage with Veritas Winery, Miranda Barossa and gained valuable international knowledge as Harvest Enologist for Kendall-Jackson at Vinwood Cellars in Sonoma,California.

Q. Starting Kalleske Wines?
A. In 2002, together with Tony, we started making wine in Tony’s shed from our family vineyard.

Q. Major winemaking accolades?
A. 2011 - Finalist in the Wine Society Young Winemaker of the Year Awards.
2010 - Awarded Trophy for Best Red Wine of Show at the Australia/New Zealand Organic Wine Show.

Q. Winemaking philosophy?
A. My belief is that real wine is made in the vineyard. As an Organic/BD winemaker, I use minimal intervention in the winery and rather let the vineyard express itself, as wine is a product that should reflect its site. I see myself as guiding the grapes into the bottle with the aim of capturing the true essence of the vineyard in the finished wine.

Q. Family?
A. I’m married to Sally and have an 18 month old daughter, Olivia. There’s also Teddy, our Jack Russell and Wilbur, our ‘miniature’ pig.

Q. Other than wine?
A. Kalleske Wines keeps me rather busy but along with spending time with the family, I also enjoy gardening, woodwork, playing basketball (recently won Barossa A-grade premiership!), jumping on the motorbike occasionally and also a spot of yabbying and fishing.

The Inaugural 2010 Kalleske Dodger Tempranillo

Shiraz and Grenache have been the backbone of our Kalleske vineyard for over a century and for good reason with our red earth and temperate climate well suited to these varieties. For the same reason, Tempranillo is befitting to our property and we are delighted to release the inaugural Tempranillo from our Kalleske vineyard. Tempranillo originates from Spain, where it is often referred to as Spain’s “noble grape”. It has been grown there for many centuries and was first planted in Australia in 1908.

2010 Kalleske Dodger Tempranillo is medium red purple in colour. The aroma displays interesting complexity with rich fruits of blackcurrant and cherry combined with herbs, clove and nutmeg spice, tobacco, violets and a hint of earth. The palate is extremely alluring with a combination of sweet and savoury characters. It is medium to full bodied with fleshy fruit balanced by integrated chewy rustic tannins. The wine is well structured and harmonious. A lingering savoury finish completes a varietally true and flavoursome Tempranillo. Dodger can be enjoyed now or over the next eight years.

2009 Kalleske Greenock Shiraz - Consumer Review

It's always great to hear from people who try our wines, so it was a pleasure to read a recent email we were sent from James Keneally of Brisbane, with his tasting notes and food recommendation for our 2009 Kalleske Greenock Shiraz. Thanks James.

2009 Kalleske Greenock Shiraz

An evocative nose of black fruits including blackberry and plums with liquorice, cinnamon and hints of glazed fruits and pudding in the background complemented by dusty oak perfume. With time in the glass the nose evolved to lovely perfumed herbal characters with touches of coffee and prunes. A full rich palate dominated by dark plum fruits and dried figs with blackberry spice and just a touch of blueberry like tannin. Wonderful mouth feel and length aided by fine tannins with just enough grip balanced nicely by lean acidity. This wine shows finesse and power, two seemingly contrasting characteristics that blend superbly. This is the type of wine that you open at an older age and wish you had seen it in its youth. Time is on its side and I am pleased to have experienced this marvelous wine in its early stages of development.

Served with beef cheeks slow cooked for 5 hours. A stunning combination you should try.

The Merchant - Kym Kalleske

With the inaugural release of our 2009 Kalleske Merchant Cabernet Sauvignon we thought it was time to tell you about Kym John Kalleske. After all you have met most of the family by now – even Wilbur the pig!

Kym Kalleske

Kym is a farmer and grape grower through and through. Following on from Greenock Primary School and then Nuriootpa High School, Kym went straight onto the farm – just like our father and grandfather before him. Kym was born August 4th 1973 which is the same birth date as Tony but 3 years later - great timing M&D!

Kym is married to Amie and has two children, Hamish, 2 1/2 years, and Jade, 6 months. Hamish is already showing an interest in the farm, loving tractor rides with his Dad as well as getting his hands dirty out in the vineyard.

With Kym and Dad tending the vineyards it allows us to focus on the winemaking side, and it is nice to be able to reflect their efforts in the wines we make. As well as taking care of the vineyard, Kym also manages other enterprises on the farm including a commercial chaff mill, Wiltshire sheep, Angus cattle and a natural fertilizer business.

Apart from farming, Kym keeps himself busy with his motorbikes and buggies (yes both plural – Kym has a quad bike, a 2 wheeler dirt bike, a sidewinder go-kart and an off-road buggy!). But there is a slower side to him too; Kym loves his gardening with a diverse range of fruit trees, vegetables, ornamentals and natives encompassing their house.

Kym is also very handy at welding and woodworking and generally making or building almost anything – either for home or the farm. Basketball is Kym’s sport of choice (apart from V8 Supercars!), and he’s been part of a winning team, with the Vikings being the Barossa’s most successful team over the past decade.

Our new Cabernet, Merchant, is a tribute to both the first Kalleske merchant, Johann Georg as well as present day merchant, Kym. An early naming idea for this wine was “KJ” (Kym John) but the large US winery, Kendall Jackson (aka KJ), may have had something to say about that! Therefore Merchant it is.

Pruning Back the Vines

It’s amazing how quick the seasons go by and this is magnified by the constant change in vineyards as they go from leafy green vines with bunches of fruit to getting pruned back bare to start the cycle again.

On this particular morning (see images below) John and Kym Kalleske were up and ready to go at sunrise in zero degree temperatures to prune back the vines.

The First Harvest - Vintage 2011

Last Wednesday marked the first “official” day of vintage 2011, with the first harvest of the season being our Chenin Blanc.

Friday Lunch - 11.03.2011

Friday lunches have turned into quite a treat at Kalleske as we all take turns cooking lunch for each other, which is always accompanied by a nice bottle or two. However it has been noted there’s been a bit of help from a wife or in some cases a mother to produce the goods on the table.

Highlights so far would be:
Troy’s ‘Gourmet’ Pizza’s, Tony’s Hotdog’s with the lot, Andy’s (Wife’s) Veg Lasagne followed by a strawberry vanilla Oreo ice cream, Samantha’s Cannelloni and Darren’s (Mums) Apple Crumble.

However with the first day of vintage getting underway today, we will be opting for the more convenient ‘occasional’ Friday BBQ until vintage runs its course. Teddy doesn’t seem to mind the extra scraps at lunch as he waits patiently under the table tho (see photo above).

With vintage just around the corner, and a lovely sunny afternoon to bask in, I thought it was a good a time as any to get out of the office (camera in hand) to see how things are shaping up.

Whilst we have had some unseasonal weather this year, I’m happy to report things are certainly looking good out there.
